mmmm maybe it's just me but have u guys actually HEARD JoJo Live? or heck seen anything with him besides the MD 98 Festival?

have u heard the performances with the Vienna Orchestra(sum of them were posted awhile ago), Prohibited Beatz, Nerve etc.

Conceptually speaking he's just as advanced in linear concepts as Bozzio/Minnemann and besides IMO he's got sum of the best "hands"(not only speed, but execution of dynamics themselves-he's study with Chapin just in case), and alot of his combinations btw hands/feet evoke a Vinnie memory. Heck forget about "chops" the guy can flat out groove(from a "drum & bass" standpoint, lots of quirky accents on that hat and building the groove from rudiments and doing "fill ins")and is probably one of the most mature players from this generation(more so than Donati or Lang)

I think alot of guys are turned off by the music itself, most of the new cats are into the whole electronics(see Akira Jimbo, Johnny Rabb etc), but even in that department JoJo is still at the forefront.(check his site out). To quote AllAbout Jazz=

"He was living inside of this stuff when no other drummers dared even attempt it, but unfortunately, has never documented his own ambitious work with a commercially released product."

Yeah I have listened to some of what you are talking about Bozzio, I really took in alot of the screaming headless torsos stuff and Guess what it sounded to much like Vinnie And Weckl at times. I do not need to hear someone doing licks (too much repetition) I have heard others do a million times.) I would rather listen to Vinnie and Weckl(their overall package). As far as Interdependence/Polyrhythmic concepts in a musical situation and dexterity ability I will take Virgil,Lang and Minneman. These guys IMO just have a Fresher and more innovative,creative and complex approach going on, something that grabs me and pulls me in.

I have his solo performance from the Montreal drumfest six years ago and It is BORING to say the least I mean he did not go anywhere with it from a technical or musical standpoint, IMO it lacked flow and direction and creativity. The drum&bass stuff well lets just say I do not care for it(from a musical standpoint)the drumming is very good, not my cup of tea. The guy is Great for sure(he is fast and precise and has very good touch and a great right foot) just not one of my favorites when it comes down to it, but Heck he is a Terrific player for sure regardless of that.

Kirk my man, u've just proved my point! Everything u mentioned was done 5/8 years ago(Screaming Headless Torsos + Montreal Festival)...Check the "resume" at his site, the range of artists and stuff he's done just speaks for itself!

Now with that logic I could listen to Thomas Lang's playing on Conrad Shrenk Extravaganza record and tell u I didn't get anything from listening to him and that he sounds like just about every "prog/metal" player(in terms of cliches)-and well it's true! But that was done in the middle 90's, and taking into account that's pretty much everything that has been commercialy released by Thomas(same situation applies for JoJo who's also european), I couldn't formulate and concrete and objective opinion while not comparing him to other players(or my favorite players)

We could sit here all day and discuss why "Player X" has more interpendence than "Player Y", but that doesn't lead to anything, yes a guy like Mangini is a master at that, but I really could I can't sa anything remotely positive about his "musical choices" and that would be my opinion ofcourse(and im sure many others would concur).....With a guy like JoJo or Vinnie u get the whole package, chops + musical taste......Check the first link with the review from AllAboutJazz, that's a great record and showcases JoJo as one of the best drummers on the scene right now...

As for the solo argument, come on man, everyone has a bad day, i've heard Vinnie and Weckl pull sum of the silliest and stupid ideas and sound like a 4yr old who just picked on drums, BUT I don't base my opinion on a "solo", I know more than that! [img]wink.gif[/img]

Hey Bozz you did not say I had to listen to stuff and form an opinion from was done in the last year or so [img]wink.gif[/img] Maybe he has grown, is that what you are saying.I sure do not have an issue with his ability to be restrained or show taste and musicality, that was not what we were talking about. I do not find of course what he did in the past to move me in a conceptual, creative manner that is about it. And you can get somewhat of a grasp of what someone can do and is doing from a ten minute solo!!, that is quite abit to listen to and digest. Maybe that day he was just way off!! Should I just do away with what I heard from the past(lots of screaming headless torsos) is that not a representation of him? Should I just listen to what is going on right now. The drum and bass stuff I have listened to it and it is not my bag. Again great drumming not my favorite music.

I do know EVERYONE! has bad days of course, I have said that before in defense of others but with the Torsos, the MD video, montreal and the drum and bass stuff I still do not LOVE!! his work. We are talking about hours of music I have listened to so I have not based an opinion off of 2 minutes of work. The reason I said I enjoy what Virgil and Lang and Minneman are doing more is just that, I like their ideas and concepts and physical abilities and how they are applying them in musical situations MORE than what I have heard from JoJo. I am not talking about touch and groove here just WHAT they are playing not HOW they are so much, chops are not everyhting also but I enjoy theirs more, just my taste of course.

Again it is all about my taste not that he is bad, like I said he is a Great Player just not one of my favorites from the hours I have heard. But I will give some of the new stuff a listen and maybe I will dig it more. And I have listened to loads of clips from Lang playing with others in band situations and some of it I do not dig so much from a style/musical standpoint and yes some of it has been done before yet he plays with good feel and taste just like JoJo does. Again not my cup of tea from a style,musical standpoint. But of course I enjoy Lang's solo work alot more. I appreciate your views and ideas, good sharing and debating with you [img]biggrin.gif[/img] and I will listen to some of your suggestions who knows maybe it will make me more of a fan.
